THE SMASHING PUMPKINS SIGN EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH UNIVERSAL MUSIC CANADA

‘Oceania’, First Full Album in More than Five Years, Released June 19

– Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company has announced that they have entered into an exclusive agreement with seminal alt-rock band The Smashing Pumpkins through their Martha’s Music record label. The deal was announced today by Universal Music Canada President and CEO, Randy Lennox and Peter Katsis, manager of Smashing Pumpkins for Prospect Park.

Produced by the principal architect behind Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan, Oceania is the first Smashing Pumpkins full album in more than five years and is set for release on 19 June 2012. The album was mixed by Canada’s three time Grammy Award winner, David Bottrill (TOOL, Muse) and is the band’s 7th studio record. Oceania is “an album within an album,” part of their in-progress 44-song work TEARGARDEN BY KALEIDYSCOPE.

“Smashing Pumpkins helped define a generational movement and they remain that tour de force today,” comment Lennox. “From Gish through Oceania, Canada and The Pumpkins have always maintained a wonderful relationship and we are thrilled that the band now calls Universal their Canadian home.”

Added Katsis: “The Smashing Pumpkins created Oceania as an album experience, and it is intended for the process of the release to follow a path of inclusion, so that best efforts are made for all the fans hear it at the same time as press or radio. We were excited to find partners in Universal Canada that were equally passionate about the plan for the album release as well as huge fans of TSP.”

The Smashing Pumpkins have created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history and have sold over 30 million albums. Formed in Chicago in 1988, they released Gish, their influential and platinum debut in 1991, which was followed by more platinum and multi-platinum albums including the nine-time platinum Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and the four-time platinum Siamese Dream as well as the platinum certified 1998 album Adore. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation. The Pumpkins returned in 2007 with their gold-certified and acclaimed sixth album Zeitgeist. They have since remained on the cutting edge of music and technology with various online releases.
