“CHERIE AMOUR” REACHES #1 ON INDIGENOUS MUSIC COUNTDOWN

17 JANUARY 2025 (TORONTO, ON) – Sebastian Gaskin – Toronto-based, Tataskweyak Cree Nation-raised multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer – previews his forthcoming debut album with the release of “Song For Granny” today via Ishkōdé Records and Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company.

The new R&B-rooted track showcases Gaskin’s compelling songwriting and cements him as a prolific multi-instrumentalist, providing all instrumentation on the track. Gaskin plays guitar, bass, drums, and synth on “Song For Granny,” and also provides vocals. Co-producer Milano (Preston Pablo, Karan Aujla, Ikky) provides additional drums and synth.

“Song For Granny” arrives during the lead-up to Gaskin’s forthcoming debut album, coming soon via Ishkōdé Records and Universal Music Canada. It serves as a letter to his late grandmother, giving family updates on everything that has happened over the years.

“When a loved one passes on, sometimes the grief is too great, too intense, to even imagine processing all at once,” says Gaskin. “Eventually, though, you find yourself wanting to speak with those you've lost, to update them on the little things that have happened since they left. I wrote this one as a sort of catch up with my late grandmother Charlotte. There have been changes in the family, selling houses and moving to the sea, health issues, comings and goings; it’s all discussed with grandma in ‘Song For Granny.’”

“Song For Granny” is Gaskin’s first new release of 2025, following a fruitful year, anchored with chart-topping success for singles “Ghost” and “Cherie Amour,” and multiple award wins including the Vince Fontaine Indigenous Song Award at the 2024 SOCAN Awards. “Ghost” was awarded at the 2024 SOCAN Awards for reaching #1 on CBC Music’s Top 20 chart, and earlier this month, Gaskin kicked off the year in a major way with “Cherie Amour” reaching #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown.

Gaskin observed National Day for Truth & Reconciliation last year with the release of the heart-wrenching single “Brown Man,” reflecting deeply on his own identity through the song’s lyrics and visuals. The official music video, directed by NSTY and filmed in Gaskin’s community of Tataskweyak Cree Nation in Split Lake, Manitoba, premiered on Etalk and shows him draped in a star blanket, one of the highest honours in the Cree community.

His live show reached international stages last year, including performances at Reeperbahn Festival in Germany, and the Tkaronto Music Festival. Gaskin is confirmed for Série Croissants-Musique in Québec in June and will soon be sharing more dates for the remainder of the year.

For award-winning Toronto-based multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter and producer Sebastian Gaskin, first, he gets comfortable with the outcome, then gets to work sculpting his experience into a song. Growing up in Tataskweyak Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba in the early 2000s, Gaskin’s mother kept the radio dialled to country stations and his grandmother, a respected community leader, belted out Southern gospel classics. Gaskin’s cousin introduced him to Metallica’s iconic sound and heavy riffs, which influenced him to pick up a guitar for the first time. As a teenager, he found endless inspiration sifting through music forums on Tumblr, wandering down rabbit holes of British indie rock, or becoming enchanted with Chief Keef’s 808s.

Intentionally genre amorphous, Gaskin’s music is grounded in bold intuition and gut instinct. At once, conjuring the timeless spirit of Bill Withers and the musical virtuosity of John Mayer, with the mischievous wordplay of Post Malone and Pro Era. A dynamic producer and arranger, Gaskin’s ear for collaboration has led him to work with Evan Miles (dvsn, renforshort) and Milano (Icona Pop) to reimagine the potential of each genre he explores. He has performed at venues and festival stages around the world, supporting artists ranging from Common, T-Pain, and others. His forthcoming debut album will be released on the Indigenous-owned music company, Ishkōdé Records and Universal Music Canada.
