17 MAY 2024 (TORONTO, ON) –
As she continues to carve out her path to music stardom, today, breakthrough singer-songwriter Sofia Camara releases her latest new single and music video “Myself” with Portuguese pop star Fernando Daniel via Universal Music Canada, 21 Entertainment, and Universal Music Portugal. This release directly follows Sofia’s viral single “Who Do I Call Now? (Hellbent),” which has surpassed over 10 million global streams to date.

This marks Sofia Camara’s first collaboration with Fernando Daniel. Produced by Jon Levine (Alessia Cara, Benson Boone, Avril Lavigne) and co-written by Camara, Levine, and David Charles Fischer (Travis Barker, Wiz Khalifa, LU KALA), “Myself” is an upbeat pop track encapsulating adolescent love and the lengths we go to preserve a relationship. This is Camara’s second new single of the year.

Having Fernando be part of this song is so special – not only because he makes amazing music and is such a kind soul, but also because it ties in with my roots being from Portugal. Representing my country is something that is very special to me,” says Sofia Camara about the new release. “’Myself’ is about being in love with somebody but not wanting to share how you feel with this person because you’re so scared to lose the friendship that came along with being in a relationship.

She sings in the chorus, “Taking my heart right off of my sleeve and now, pushing it down and you’ll never find out, bury my love six feet underground, I keep how I feel to myself.” Fernando Daniel echoes the song’s sentiment in his verse before duetting with Camara in the chorus.

I had already seen some of Sofia’s videos on TikTok without knowing that she was Portuguese, and when I found out I thought it was a coincidence,” says Fernando Daniel about his collaborator. “I immediately thought that being abroad and singing in English, she would have many possibilities for worldwide success – she is so talented. The collaboration came naturally and recording the video was fun! It was an intense day, but since we got along so well, the long day was easily overcome by good times and chemistry. When I heard her sing for the first time in the studio, I was completely captivated. She has phenomenal technique!

The two artists star in the music video, directed by André Tentúgal and shot in Portugal, as a young couple getting to know one another, making the most of their time together with various fun activities. They share laughs over bowling, go-karting, and arcade games before raiding the grocery store for snacks and attending a karaoke night, where they sing “Myself” together. They end the night by observing the skyline before slowly drifting apart, mirroring the song’s theme of keeping to oneself and holding back your emotions.

This collaboration with Fernando Daniel comes amid Sofia Camara’s breakthrough campaign, which heated up with her latest single “Who Do I Call Now? (Hellbent)” amassing over 10 million global streams and being highlighted on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs chart and the Viral Hits playlist in Canada, the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, and more. She recently performed the song at the International Portuguese Music Awards on May 4, where she was also nominated for “Best New Talent.” Her performance will air later this summer on Camões TV in Canada, The Portuguese Channel in the United States, RTP1 in Portugal, and RTP International across the globe.

Her debut single backed by Universal Music Canada and 21 Entertainment, “Never Be Yours,” was released in 2022 and was a success story at Canadian radio, peaking at #19 on the Top 40 charts, and reaching #22 and #34 on the Hot AC and Main AC charts respectively. She was highlighted as iHeartRadio’s Future Star in February and March 2023.

The 21-year-old Toronto-based vocalist and multi-instrumentalist will be supporting Shawn Desman across Western Canada on tour this month, following a successful run including stops in Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa, and more earlier this year. She also announced this week her first headline shows in Europe, making stops in London and Amsterdam this summer. See dates below.

ABOUT SOFIA CAMARA:
Sofia Camara builds her songs with an architect’s vision. For the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Toronto, she’ll glide across the keys, or strum a chord progression, until she lands on a melody that fits the lyrical storyline she’s been weaving together in her head. She writes best when it’s late. Nightfall invites a particular vulnerability, when animated recollections of the day become the seed of inspiration — often, she replays on the events of the day, and imagines a new outcome.

Her latest viral single “Who Do I Call Now? (Hellbent)” is the triumph of an artist attuned to the contours of her voice — a gift to her over 1.2 million followers across social platforms who have liked her videos over 20 million times and streamed the song over 10 million times. It aligns with an artistic ambition devoted to relatability above all else, and attempts to offer up her experiences so others might better understand theirs. Instinctually, she defers space to the emotions of those around her: always listening, learning, then leaning into what she hears. It’s the same way she approaches covers of songs crafted by others (Miley Cyrus was a fan of Camara’s cover of “When I Look at You”) with more than a goal to recreate, but a desire to fully embody the spirit of a song; getting in between the lines of a track and creating something raw and new. A perfectionist at heart, Sofia Camara is pushing the boundaries of her comfort zone to better perfect her craft.

Approaching universal themes — like infatuation and heartache, loss and self-discovery — Sofia Camara finds the sweet spot of post-adolescent curiosity, mixed with a self-aware maturity wise beyond her years. She’s detail-oriented above all else, pinpointing a deeply human emotion then examining it from all sides. She’s courageously a work in progress.
